The studio transformation continues with a custom-made plywood table top to fit over the 4 IKEA EFFEKTIV bookcases to complete the craft table. I love how it has turned out!

Now, I’m on an obsessive search for stools. Initially I was going to go with the basic Mill Store wooden bar stools but I think I want something more comfy. Maybe one of these? I’m loving the red.

I made my first purchase trip to IKEA for the 4 EFFEKTIV bookcases that will be making up the base of my new craft table. I love how the look together. Next up are the 3 BESTA shelving units for the back wall and the custom plywood top for the craft table. There is only so much IKEA furniture I can transport at one time. In the meantime, I have a temporary table top in place just so the room can be used during the transformation. I am so pleased as to how it’s turning out and can’t wait to finish the project!

A while back I made slight reference to wanting to change my dining room into a studio space. I am happy to say that I am finally on my way to doing it. I realized after living with the dining room for over 4 years that it only gets used on Christmas and the occasional sit-down dinner. (We are talking like 1-2 times a year). In the meantime, it stores my unorganized project messes and dog crates. Very poor use of space especially since it has five big windows with great light, it’s located next to the open kitchen and I can listen to the tv! So, after a couple trips to IKEA with a camera and notebook in hand I have come up with a mood board for the room.
Current Dining Room (chairs removed before photo was taken)

Current Dining Room (what it normally looks like)

Mood Board

While designing the space, I have to keep in mind that the dog crates are staying, that the room is very open so I need lots of places to stash things, and that I would like to have dinner in there those one, two or three times a year that the room requires. Fortunately, I love the paint color so that can stay and I’m keeping the jute rug.

Last week I had the opportunity to take a video documentary class through the Massachusetts College of Art and Design Continuing Education program. I took the course to learn how to work a camera, set up decent lighting and gain some editing experience. I got those 3 things and a whole hell of a lot more. It was an intensive and uncomfortable week of being in front of and behind the camera.
Image of my group in crisis:

Our project got the kabash from public safety and we had only 45 minutes left to capture our video. We ended up creating a documentary on “making a documentary” and it turned out better than we anticipated.
Course Description:
A one-week, full-time, immersion for students who want to learn the fundamentals of video documentary in an intimate and focused setting. Participants will develop an understanding of basic shooting techniques, picture composition, sound, lighting, interviewing, and editing with Final Cut. The class will guide students through a series of assignments using traditional, cinéma vérité, and subjective approaches. Through exercises, screening, discussion, and critique, students will be exposed to a range of storytelling, aesthetic, and artistic issues. From artists who want to document their work, to aspiring documentary filmmakers who want to share stories of social reality, this class will provide a strong foundation to build upon. Prior video production experience is helpful, but not required, whether you are a beginner or have some experience, this boot camp will be a good learning experience.
